Cotswolds Salesforce Community Group: Applying principles and considering profiles

Thursday 25th November, we hosted our last Cotswolds Salesforce Community Group event before the New Year. We were thrilled to have so many members of the Salesforce Ohana join and learn from our fantastic speakers – not forgetting taking part in our Salesforce trivia quiz.
We were delighted to have been joined by two inspiring speakers and wanted to re-share the top points from their informative sessions. This week, we’re showcasing the top tips from Louise Lockie and Salesforce security.
Louise Lockie, marvellous Salesforce MVP
An inspiring figure in the Salesforce ecosystem, Louise Lockie is a Salesforce MVP with serious speaking skills. Louise is also a 16x certified Application Architect, Certified Instructor, Women in Tech Leader and Conference Speaker. With a strong background in working with senior stakeholders to identify, Louise clearly understands and captures business requirements with security in mind.
Locking it down and opening it up
Louise’s session provided clarity with a simple back to basics style. It was a great reminder to not make assumptions, and surfaced some great insights and tips for even the most experienced admins.
Applying principles
Louise made it clear that it is important to apply the principle of least privilege within a Salesforce org.
Considering profiles
Considering just four profiles such as baseline users, sys admin, integration user and api only in your orgs can provide an excellent element of security. Plus a fifth profile for Chatter may be beneficial. Phasing out profiles and moving to permission sets and permission set groups and making sure these are documented in the org is also an important step.
Layout changes
Page layout changes can now be managed using dynamic forms and conditional sections. Louise suggested researching effective visualisation tools to view security set-up outside of the org e.g such as Perm comparator.
